afvd_logo.jpgDAY 10, July 13th 2011

Today is transition day as we move to Wien after a very important 30-20 win yesterday against Australia. I tip my hat to the Australian coaching staff as they came at us with everything they had and kept it a close game. They attacked our defense with short timing passes that were very effective. They also rolled the dice twice on 4th and long and came away both times with big touchdowns. From a fans’ standpoint it was a great game to watch, just as many of the games have been. We did not help ourselves with our Special Teams play, but had a good day offensively and played strong defensively when it got real close. The difficulties of playing 3 games in 5 days have really taken a toll physically on our team and the next 2 days will be a big test for our already overworked medical staff. Our guys really need some recovery time
and the next 2 days will be very helpful towards that purpose.

As far as our Cowboys players go all four are doing well. We had a scare with Jarome during the USA game, but he is fine and played well against Australia. Georg is also doing well playing TE for us, so much so that I would like to make him a full-time TE with us. But first I have to see how our O-line is doing. Gary has been impressive in practice and I am, personally, disappointed that he has not gotten more playing time. Unfortunately, that’s the way it goes sometimes at that position. I know he is ready and will perform well when given the chance. Albert was in for most of the game against Australia and also played well.

For the first time, I actually had a couple hours free this morning. Max von Garnier (our WR Coach) and I decided to go mountain climbing and went up to a 2334m peak above Innsbruck. It was nice to get away for little time. The view from above was amazing and hanging out with ‘Mega’ is always good for more than a few laughs. ‘Mega’ is an exceptional WR coach and a great guy to hang out with. I didn’t really have any hiking gear but managed with a t-shirt, shorts and my favorite black rubber clogs. I failed to take into account the climate change at such altitudes. It was a little chilly up there but in the end we only ‘hiked’ some 200m from the cable gondola house to the peak of Hafelekarspitze.

Tonight we are watching the Austria-France game for which we play the winner of for 5th place on Saturday. We are all pulling for Austria because playing them on Saturday would provide a tremendous atmosphere in the stadium.

Servus!
